To the residents of Brooklawn,
The police department has been approached with questions in regards to the “911”
system. Many residents have reported that they do not like to call as the call
takers ask many questions. As aggravated as you may become answering these
questions, you must understand that they are important. Until technology offers
a better solution, this system is the best. When you call the county dispatch
using either 911 or 456-3434, the call taker should ask the basic questions;
Who, what, when, where, how, and why.
• Who – your information. This is requested to confirm the information received
through the 911 system. To identify a call back number and address. This is
important in cases that the officer may want to speak with you or the call is
disconnected and a call back is needed. Remember, many calls today are made by
cell phones and callers could be located anywhere.
• What – they will ask what you are reporting. With the initial information
gathered about the incident, the call will be directed to the proper dispatcher.
Either the police or the fire/EMS dispatcher. In our community the calls will be
directed to both, but the call will be prioritized then directed appropriately.
You will be asked to provide as much, and in detail, information in regards to
the incident, and or any suspected persons or vehicles. This information is very
important to the police, as it will help in identifying offenders to the first
responding officer and any additional officers that may be responding to assist.
It is also important for the officer’s safety. An accurate identification is
important. Gather as much information as possible but remain safe.
• What – You will be asked what you are reporting. Again, if it is a fire or
medical incident it will be directed to first the appropriate responder and also
the police. However, the most important responder for the incident will be
dispatched first. In Brooklawn you must remember that the police will respond
and in most cases will arrive first as the Fire and EMS services are volunteer.
And again, we ask that information be accurate for everyone’s safety.
• When – Many questions may be asked as to when. Did the incident happen some
time ago? Is the incident occurring while the call is being made? These are two
important questions when it comes to prioritizing calls. And please understand
that call prioritizing is done. We will be directed to the most
important/serious call first.
• How – a brief description of how the incident occurred will be helpful in many
ways including. For responders to know how the incident occurred could result in
the location and identification of suspects while we are enroute answering your
call.
• Why – You may be asked if you know why the incident occurred or who the
suspect(s) may be. The information you provide could/will be important for any
follow-up investigations that may be conducted.
Please remember that the system was designed to help you, not discourage you
from making the call. Be patient, any initial information gathered may become
not only extremely important but may be vital for everyone’s safety.
The police can be reached with 3 different calls:
• Calling 911 will connect you with a 911-call taker. This is the number you
MUST use to report an emergency. POLICE – FIRE - MEDICAL
• Calling 456-3434. This number has been the number for police for many, many
years. This call will connect you with a 911-call taker, the same call takers
that will answer the 911 call stated above. You can use both numbers to call for
police for non-emergency use. Just explain to the call taker that the call is
not an emergency and that you need to speak with a Brooklawn Police officer.
They will ask the questions to gather information.
• Calling 456-0750 X 110 will connect you to the police station and extension
111 will connect you to the chief’s office. If someone is in headquarters at the
time you make the call, your call will be answered. If not, we ask that you
leave a voicemail. Your call will be returned as soon as it is retrieved from
the voicemail system.
For non-emergency calls and it is important that you speak with an officer, call
the 456-3434. Explain that it is not an emergency but you need to speak with an
officer. An officer will either respond to your home or you may receive a call
from the officer. Remember, it is possible that the officer is on the scene of a
more serious incident. You will get a response but it may take some time.
For other calls that do not require a response within a reasonable amount of
time, call the 456-0750 numbers and leave a message. Once your message is
retrieved you will hear from an officer.
CALL 911 FOR ANY EMERGENCY; LET THE CALL TAKERS DIRECT THE CALL TO THE
APPROPRIATE INITIAL RESPONDER.
PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE, CALL 911 TO REPORT ANYTHING.
IF YOU WISH, ADVISE THE CALL TAKER THAT YOU WISH TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS OR DO NOT
WANT YOUR ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER TRANSMITTED TO THE POLICE OFFICER, TELL THE
CALL TAKER. THEY WILL DO THEIR BEST AT DOING SO. IF WE NEED TO SPEAK WITH YOU, A
CALL CAN BE MADE TO YOU.
REMEMBER YOUR INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY HELPFUL.
